Friedrich-W. Koch

Born 1929 in Arnsberg

Resident since 1958 in Haus-Kannen

Friedrich-Wilhelm Koch studied Law in Munich. The first signs of his illness came at the beginning of his studies. He has been living in Haus Kannen for a long time now. Friedrich-Wilhelm Koch regularly paints and draws scenes, animals, and faces, copying from originals. He prefers the expressionist motifs of August Macke, and illustrations from an animal encyclopaedia. He outlines the motif in clear and quick chalk lines, which he then colours in. His pictures are quick sketches of what he has seen. In a series of small-format drawings and texts he has created, in his art therapy, a resume of his life. "Nothing moves. Nothing moves in Haus Kannen. The days flow by calmly, all the same. With no particular excitement or disturbances. That is very nice, because it lets us remain at peace. I move. Every morning I go for a walk." Friedrich Wilhelm Koch was born in Homberg, Germany. In 1958 he came toAlexianerHospital. Since 1984 he draws and paints regularly.  He signs his works with the name “Kuehn”, which he has chosen to be his pseudonym. His motifs are chosen out of art books. This is why the observer sometimes feels reminded of famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh or August Macke. With clear, strong lines the artist draws faces, figures or landscapes. Then he surrounds these objects by thin layers of chalk. Koch himself refuses to date his works. “I do not write dates on my pictures! The pictures are timeless, independent of time and space.”
